History Of
Smyrna, GA

Smyrna was originally known as Ruffs Siding. It later came to be called Varners Station and finally Smyrna, after the local campground area.

This city was incorporated in 1872 and operates under a mayor and council members. The city Administrator is appointed to serve as the city’s chief administrative officer. Over time, the municipality has developed into an active member within its regional landscape – covering approximately 15 sq miles.

Two Civil War battles occurred on July 4, 1964 near this area: Battle at Ruff’s Mill & Battle for Campgrounds (Smyrna).

The railroad played a pivotal role in the early development of Smyrna. In 1836, construction on a railway began through Cobb County and was completed four years later. This laid down the foundation for Smyrna to grow into what it is today as evidenced by its establishment as an official city around this time along with mills and factories that helped contribute to its growth during these times.

By the 19th century, Smyrna was primarily an agrarian community. There were industries and a railroad throughout this time period, but they largely relied on agriculture as their primary industry for livelihoods.
