Chamblee, GA
There’s a rich history to this town that dates back all the way to when it was still full of dairy farms. The intersection where two railroads intersected and carried passengers and goods from Atlanta-to Charlotte, North Carolina, is what ultimately led people here in Chamblee.
The settlement of Roswell Junction was founded at the intersection, and a post office established there. But feeling that the name too closely resembled nearby Roswell, they randomly selected Chamblee from those who submitted petitions for naming it to be so. And in 1907 this town became incorporated as well!
The Camp Gordon site was used for military purposes before and after World War I. After the first war, it became a flight training center until 1941 when they had to close again due to another attack by Germany on America. However, in 1942 Lawson Veterans Hospital opened there with amputees using prosthetic limbs being one of their specialties under Harold Russell’s tutelage who would later be known as an Oscar-winner for The Best Years of Our Lives.
The City had been experiencing a growth in its industrial areas for decades, but World War II served to speed up the process. It was during this time that General Motors set up shop here and brought with them jobs opportunities as well as strong tax revenues. Frito-Lay, Kodak and General Electric followed suit too by building their own plants which helped to broaden the base of employees available while also providing additional sources of revenue for the city’s coffers.
In 2012 the city had a small margin of voters vote against an annexation proposal. In November 2013, another plan was passed by more than 2/3rds of voters in favor. Earlier in 2013 DeKalb County had also approved for Chamblee to be officially recognized as a City by the county; something that they hadn’t done since the town was a fledgling settlement in 1907.
As of recent times, real estate for sale in Chamblee is selling at competitive prices even though they really aren’t that far from Atlanta!
