Market Update of
Decatur, GA

History Of
Decatur, GA

Prior to European settlement, Decatur was largely forested and the area had two Native American trails:  the Sandtown which led east from Utoy Creek by way of a modern-day trail called Fernbank Forest, and Shallowford Road.

During the American Civil War, Decatur became a strategic site in General Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. In July 1864 Major-General James McPherson occupied the town to cut off Confederate supply lines from Augusta. On July 22 during battle of Atlanta, Confederates attacked Union troops defending their wagons and supplies with cavalry led by Joseph Wheeler at courthouse location commemorated today as historical marker for skirmish that followed on street nearby.

The 1960s and 1970’s were tough on the city of Decatur, as many wealthy residents fled to suburbs in order for their kids to avoid attending integrated schools. However, these days it has regained its economic vigour thanks in part due to a number of new downtown development plans which are turning Decatur into an attractive mixed-use district with easy transit connections right down town Atlanta.

The evolution of the city of Decatur can perhaps best be understood by studying how its historic districts, commercial areas and neighborhoods have developed over time. The changes in the various districts can be best seen by studying their architecture styles, from Victorian to Art Deco. What makes this place so vibrant? That’s easy – diversity! With different economic climates throughout various decades affecting each district differently, these varying characteristics come together to create a modern-day version that is diverse in character.
